Several people I follow (for instance, Brandon and Sara) have updated their App Defaults declaration, and it makes sense to update mine as well, to reflect the few changes that occurred in the thirteen months since my first post. A star marks the categories where there are changes.
The RSS category is something I could see a change coming soon, because, as much as I like NetNewsWire, it doesn’t fully work for me: for some reason, it doesn’t accept all the feeds I read on MacOS, so every day I also need to check on iOS (where it has no problem updating all feeds). Furthermore, but I would like an RSS reader that lets me choose to open posts directly in their original website: I love RSS but I think it de-humanises the small web. If anybody has any recommendation, please let me know.
Also, I’m going through a de-Googlisation phase, which made me open a new email account with a new provider.
- ⭐️ Mail Client : Mailmate on MacOS, Spark on iOS (it used to be Outlook, but the ads on it have become more prominent, and I haven’t been able to configure my new mail provider with it - unless I agree to have all my emails routed through Microsoft ‘for my convenience’… so, bye bye Outlook)
- ⭐️ Mail Provider: moving progressively from GMail to Posteo
- Notes: Obsidian, Apple Notes
- Todo: Due, Apple Reminders… periodically I try Things
- iPhone camera app: the default app
- Photo Management: Apple Photos
- Calendar: Fantastical
- Contacts: Apple Contacts, Cardhop to have a nice widget for birthdays
- ⭐️ Weather: IRM (the app of the Belgian Institut Royal Météorologique), Apple Weather; the change is that I’ve unsubscribed from Carrot Weather after several years, because, regardless of the provider, it’s not very accurate in Belgium
- Cloud storage: iCloud Drive, Dropbox (only because a few apps use it for synchronisation)
- ⭐️ RSS: NetNewsWire (and ReadKit for the feeds that NNW rejects) on MacOS and iOS, synched via Feedly; FieryFeeds is another subscription I’m discontinuing - although it’s one of those readers that does show the posts in the original website style - so I might go back on this decision
- Browser: Safari in order to keep everything synched across devices
- Chat: WhatsApp
- ⭐️ Bookmarks: it used to be Raindrop and Zotero, I find I never really stick to any bookmark system, and more often than not I end up with a million tabs open just to remind me of stuff I want to read
- ⭐️ Read Later: same as for the bookmarks - it used to be Pocket because of the Kobo integration
- ⭐️ Shopping List: Apple Reminders, although its categorisation of products in French is almost criminal (such as: ‘bleach’ goes into the ‘beverages’ category); I haven’t used AnyList, which was one of my previous choices, in a long time
- Music: Apple Music
- Podcasts: Overcast; I considered changing to something else during the dark period immediately after Marco Arment rewrote it from scratch, but it has gone back to fully satisfying since
- ⭐️ Video Streaming: I still have a subscription to Netflix and Disney+
- Social Networks: Mastodon via Ice Cubes (sometimes actively), BlueSky(only lurking), Letterboxd (every day)
- ⭐️ Maps: I’m trying to use Apple Maps more in general, and Transit for public transport, but sometimes I’ll still resort to Google Maps
- Text Editor: BBEdit
- Reading: Kobo Libra 2
- Launcher: Alfred
- ⭐️ Search: DuckDuckGo, but, as much as it gives me pain, I have to admit that for technical stuff and explanations I sometimes turn to Chat GPT
- Automation and shortcuts: Hazel, Keyboard Maestro, BetterTouchTool
- Development: PyCharm
